Maven Silk Q+A: “Is This Normal”
These are all natural characteristics of raw matka silk, the textile used to make your Maven Silk carrier. Handspun with variation in the yarn, you’ll notice texture differences like thicker and thinner threads, slubs, weaver’s knots, tiny loops, and subtle striping across the fabric. While these may look unusual at first, they’re completely normal and part of what gives this silk its charm and unique character. We’ve been using this same matka silk for Maven since it launched in 2017, and it has always had this textured, rustic quality.
We’ve included some close-up photos of our Maven Silk below so you can see the yarn texture, weaver’s knots, and the subtle stripes we’re referring to. These textures may appear in different spots on each carrier, which is all part of the handwoven nature of this textile.
While we try to trim any larger thread ends before shipping, we like to leave the fabric intact to preserve its full character. If you notice a small thread or loop, it can safely be tucked to the other side of the fabric using a safety pin. This is what we do here at the workshop, too.
We love the natural variation, texture, and rustic charm of this handwoven silk, and hope you do, too!
