Simple Silk Q+A: "Is this normal?"

Simple Silk Q+A: "Is this normal?"

Simple Silk Q+A:  "Is this normal?" aka What To Expect with your Simple Silk 🤓
Q: I just got my Simple silk carrier, and it has nubs, slubs, knots, and tiny loops. Is this normal?
A: Yes, totally normal!
These are all natural characteristics of dupioni silk, the textile used to make your Simple silk carrier. Handwoven with a rustic slub yarn, you’ll notice texture variations like nubs, slubs, knots, loops, and even little threads of different colors woven in. While they may appear at first as flaws, they’re totally normal and actually what make the fabric so unique. We love this silk so much, it is the one textile that has remained a constant since we opened way back in 2006.

We took some close-up photos of our new Catalina and Stardust silks to give you a better look. These close up images were taken from two small pieces of silk, showing what you can expect with your Simple carrier. Some batches may have more loops or slubs - it's all part of the silk’s natural character. While we trim any loose threads before shipping, we prefer to leave the fabric intact to preserve its charm.

If you notice a small thread or loop, know that silk fibers are short so you can safely trim them without compromising the strength or integrity of your carrier. That said, some of the big chunky weaver's knots can leave a little hole so we like to use a pin to push those through to the other side if they are bothering us. We can do a video on that another day!

We love the natural variation and imperfection of the nubs and slubs in this hand spun yarn, and hope you do, too!
